At Corixa, we like to put something back into the local community and where we can, we support Bristol-based charities or community groups with ad hoc PR campaigns. This year we’re providing sponsorship in kind to a group of talented artists from CONTAINER, an artist-led exhibition and workshop space set up by the Stokes Croft Contemporary Arts Project CIC, to help them highlight an exciting new venture with Bristol’s City Museum and Art Gallery.
Hot on the heels of last summer’s triumphant Banksy versus Bristol Museum exhibition, CONTAINER has been commissioned to curate a series of six art installations for the museum. Focused around one of the two plinths at the foot of the main stairs in the museum’s entrance, the installations are adjacent to a Banksy angel sculpture which was given to the museum at the end of his show in 2009.
Over the coming year, the empty plinth will be used by the museum to unearth and showcase just some of the huge array of artistic talent which is rife within Bristol. Each of the six artists from CONTAINER will have their carefully crafted installation, created specifically for this location, on display for two months at a time over a 12 month period.
Corixa launched the first of a series of six shows to the media earlier this month, achieving coverage in the Bristol Evening Post and Venue, as well as scoring three radio interviews including BCFM’s drive time slot, BBC Radio Bristol’s Graham Torrington Show and Ben Prater’s drive time show on the station.
The works of art showcased have been designed to reflect different subjects, with some connecting with or reacting to other works in the museum. The line-up of artists from CONTAINER exhibiting their work during the course of the year includes Ben Rowe, Ian Penna, Ellen Bell, Andrew Southall, Robert Manners and Irena Czapska.
So what are you waiting for ? Pop along to Bristol’s City Museum and Gallery to see the latest art installation, and be amazed by just some of the incredible local talent! For further information, visit http://www.containerarts.org/plinth/
