We got a letter this morning, congratulating Corixa Communications on having been an Investor in People for over a decade. In fact, we first qualified for the standard in 1997, in IoP’s infancy.

Since then, the standard itself has changed almost beyond recognition, and many of our ‘invested in’ people have moved on or away from the South West, got married, emigrated, had babies, left work completely, and generally experienced all the life changing events that tend to mark those interesting years between graduation and hitting middle age.

But our commitment to the principle of investing our people – and expecting them to invest in us – remains the same. Keeping people well informed, being open and honest – on both sides – about our expectations of each other, and dealing with everyone fairly and consistently, are even more important than training. And with or without a certificate on the wall, mutual respect is what binds a team together and makes it more than the sum of its parts.

So, less than a week after completing its acquisition of Cadbury, and having promised, during the bidding process, to reverse Cadbury’s decision to close its Bristol based factory, Kraft announces that the Somerdale plant, is, after all, to close.

Not a huge surprise for the commercially minded, the pragmatists and the cynics amongst us, but a bit of a bombshell for the 400 workers at the factory whose hopes, over the last few months have been raised and dashed again and again.

Unite’s Jennie Formby is quoted as saying that Kraft’s “dishonesty” was a concern for the future relationship between the company and Cadbury workers.

But how much consumer trust and respect will be lost to the Kraft brand as a result of this very sharp U turn? As PR practitioners are fond of saying, it takes a long time to build a brand, and a very short time to destroy it. And sometimes, just sometimes, I can’t help thinking that the short term commercial drivers should be weighed up more carefully against the potential long term damage done by over promising and under delivering.

We certainly have that Friday feeling today following two great achievements this week for the Corixa team.

We were delighted to receive the news that we had won a new contract – producing South West Water’s employee facing newsletter. Corixa’s remit includes developing the copy for the quarterly newsletter, as well as managing the design, print and production.

Meanwhile, account director Sylvie Pender has been awarded Accredited Practitioner status by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), having completed three year’s participation in the Institute’s Developing Excellence continuous professional development (CPD) scheme. This award reflects the steps that Sylvie has taken to improve and maintain her competency as a PR practitioner, having demonstrated her commitment to maintaining the highest levels of professional skills and knowledge. Sylvie has also just been awarded an NVQ Level 2 in Team Leading.

It must be about time to break out the bubbly…..cheers!

Those that can, do. Those that can’t, teach. So runs the decades-old mantra of the anti-education brigade. But for a bunch of know-alls, they’re singularly silent on the subject of those that both do and teach.

Like Laura and Louise, for example. They recently ran a PR workshop at Goldbrick House in Bristol to help those working in creative industries in Bristol to understand how PR can work for them, and to give them a helping hand with developing some of the basic tools. The session included an overview of planning and developing a relevant strategy, identifying target audiences, and developing media messages. Finally, it was back to brass tacks when attendees were asked to develop a press release based on their own company news.

It was really encouraging that a variety of businesses from TV production, to design and digital, were interested enough to attend. The feedback was really positive. Thank you to everyone who attended!

This is third seminar we have hosted over the last year. Back in the summer we put together a seminar for businesses wanting to understand more about the use of digital and social media and how to integrate these new media channels and tools into their current marketing strategy. We also hosted a free half day workshop session for clients on the same topic, at which delegates had a chance to really explore the use of wikis, twitter, forums and blogs.

There’s a real revolution in the fact that now we’re all publishers of our own content. Anyone who sets up their own online blog, joins a discussion, or tweets information via twitter can be heard by a waiting world. And more than ever before, the quality of the content will determine whether anyone is prepared to listen.

There wasn’t a Pringle jumper in sight when the team celebrated Corixa’s 16th birthday in (non Argyle) style with a round of crazy golf.

Sylvie’s bizarrely effective one-handed chop shot (patent pending) would have horrified conservationists and health and safety experts alike. Fortunately, all foliage and wildlife at the Jungle Rumble course was plastic, so we only had the course owners – and a few shell shocked fellow golfers – to answer to.

And with glasses in hand as we putted, we didn’t even have to wait until the 19th to take the edge off some truly horrific scores.

A seven year old we know has a favourite golfing joke which goes thus: Why should a golfer always take a spare pair of socks? Answer – in case he gets a hole in one. The reason seven year olds think this is so hilarious is that unlike many more adult jokes, there’s no victim. And whether you’re seven or sixteen, you’ve got to think that the occasional victimless joke is a refreshingly good thing. Even if it’s not funny.

Happy birthday Corixa!

To help businesses understand how to implement digital within a communications plan, Laura Tallett, Head of professional & financial services at Corixa, along with three other marketing and online experts recently delivered a seminar for Bristol businesses. The forum focussed on the different, and growing, digital channels and inspired business owners to review their comms plans and strategies and think about how digital PR could work for their business. Everything from search engine optimisation and marketing to digital promotional activity and building an online community was covered, through a series of presentations.

Laura also recently held a similar seminar for our clients into digital PR, and how they can implement digital channels into their media campaigns. The seminar included interactive sessions into the different digital platforms, and information on evaluating social and digital media.

Corixa will be holding more seminars like this over the coming months, so get in touch if this is something you would like to be a part of.

The Standard is an assurance to clients that Corixa adheres to strict quality standards in management, communication and service delivery.

The CMS is an independently-audited set of eight tests which a consultancy must pass before it is eligible for membership of the Public Relations Consultants Association. It combines elements of ISO 9000 and Investors in People with criteria specific to the public relations industry.

Francis Ingham, director-general PRCA says: “Well run businesses consistently deliver the results clients are looking for. The Consultancy Management Standard was developed specifically to ensure that PRCA members have the systems and structures in place to meet and exceed clients’ expectations. The Standard has been so successful that it has now been adopted in 14 countries around the world.”

Corixa is one of over 160 PRCA members based throughout the UK. These consultancies are of all sizes, working for clients in all business sectors. Together they employ around 5,000 people and generate more than £400 million in each year in fees from clients.

Predominantly, this has been around traditional media outlets such as newspapers, magazines, radio and TV. But communications channels are changing, and like it or not, your business or organisation is being blogged about, discussed, reviewed and commented upon. You need to know about it!

There is no clear definition of who is and who isn’t media anymore and essentially we are all publishers if we want to be. We can create our own content on blogs, or via twitter and soon Facebook will be opening up the status section of the site to the public, if you opt in to this. As a form of communication, it is as

important to the 21st Century as both television and the mobile phone explosion have been.

No Description
